Darren Holmes - Station Director

Darren started his radio career at Radio Barnsley as a volunteer radio presenter 18 years ago and progressed to Studio Manager. Darren played a key role in the team that facilitated the move of the hospital radio service into new premises at the hospital in 1995, during which time he also worked at Radio Aire as a features producer/presenter and a short stint at Wakefield Hospital radio.
 
Darren presented the breakfast show and produced other programmes on a trial broadcast in Doncaster for the licence later won by Trax FM, and was a key presenter and station manager for three commercial trial RSL's in Buxton, Barnsley and Rotherham. Darren also advised and helped out on a community radio trial RSL in Thorne, nr Doncaster for TMCR.
 
Darren was a director for Radio Investments on a commercial radio bid for Barnsley and also for The Local Radio Company in Rotherham, coupled with this Darren still takes a lead role at Barnsley Hospital Broadcasting managing the finance and programmes including Managing 2 RSL's celebrating National Hospital Broadcasting Week and was the project manager for our 2006 RSL. Darren's wealth of radio experience will create a sound base to build a successful and diverse board of directors.

Martin Sugden - HR Director

Martin Sugden started his radio broadcasting career with Hospital Radio back in 1986 with Radio Barnsley and then Barnsley Hospital Broadcasting. Part of this work involved collecting and choosing the weekly music from local record shops.

In the early 90’s Martin was promoted to the position of station manager, training young people in broadcasting skills and request collecting from the hospital patients.

In 1995 he was an integral part of a small team that negotiated the relocation of the station into the hospital ground from the centre of town. Raising money to build new studios was the biggest challenge for the team and later that year they began broadcasting to the 1,000 patients in the hospital.

Martin worked for a brief spell at Radio Aire helping out the evening show. During the World student games Martin was one of the media managers at the Sheffield Arena dealing with journalists from all over the world.

Martin has considerable experience in delivering training in radio skills and many of the trainees have gone on to work for the BBC and Commercial stations, one former trainee is now a Sony award winner.

He helped to set-up and run several Hospital Radio RSL’s celebrating National Hospital Broadcasting week. Which has been a very valuable experience for Martin. Martin has also worked for Select FM during their application for a commercial licence in the local area.

Martin’s role will be the management of the volunteer process. Martin will ensure that the handling of enquiries from people wishing to volunteer is properly handled, documented and managed in a professional and timely manner.

Martin will ensure that new volunteers are inducted on station and Ofcom policy and health and safety procedures.

Martin will manage the process of volunteer’s allocation to an appropriate mentor, and will monitor & document progression of their training.

Martin will also present programmes on Penistone Community Radio.

Andrew Millner - Partnership Development Director

Andrew has tremendous experience in the community, he has been a member of Penistone Round Table for over 19years and now the Penistone 41 club, taking on roles of Chairman both locally and regionally.

Andrew is a member of the board of Penistone District Community Partnership. This voluntary grant aided group support numerous projects which seek to enhance the standing of Penistone and the surrounding villages as a tourist attraction for visitors to Penistone.

Andrew is a member of Leader + which is a similar voluntary grant aided group which seeks to improve the facilities and environment in and around Penistone.

Andrew is Secretary for Penistone Grammar School Parents' Association. This association raises funds for additional facilities and enhancements for the benefit of the children of Penistone Grammar School. The PA also supports activities for the benefit of adult learning through Learning Net.

Andrew was elected to serve as a Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Councillor for the Penistone West Ward in May 2006 to serve for 4 years.

Andrew was elected in May 2007 to serve as a Penistone Parish Council for the Penistone Town ward to serve for 4 years. Andrew is also a co-opted member on Dunford Parish Council supporting Carlecotes and Crowedge.

Andrew is very well connected locally and will use this networking opportunity to create relationships between Penistone Community Radio and key organisations in the area, Parish and Town councils, Penistone Grammar School and regeneration partnerships. 

Andrew will also present programmes on Penistone Community Radio.

Dominic Musgrave - Communications & Media Director

Dominic Musgrave is a trained journalist who has worked in newspapers nationwide for the past 10 years. Whilst working for the Newbury Weekly News also presented a weekly sports preview show on local radio station Kick Community Radio. Dominic is the Editor for three local magazines published by Wharncliffe Publishing Ltd

Dominic will ensure our local news provision is relevant, legal and balanced. Mentoring news volunteers and providing advice to the board on publications, press releases and the website. 

Dominic will build relationships with news & entertainment sources and Emergency Services, Traffic Management, Councils and key local people who have their ear to the ground in the community.

Dominic will also present programmes on Penistone Community Radio.

Richard Ward - Community Development Director

A former DJ in Jersey Richard has been a presenter on Hospital Radio for 9 years and also commentates on Barnsley Football Club matches.

Richard has represented Penistone Community Radio as MC and after dinner speaker at several events including a prestigious event for UNICEF and is a natural communicator in front of a live audience.

Richard has many years experience as a teacher for Barnsley Council and has undertaken roles such as Recruitment Manager and Area Manager in the leisure industry.

Richard is a board member for the MIND charity in Barnsley and has held the position of Secretary and Treasurer. Richard is a member of the local “Dry Stone Walling Association”

Richard will develop his existing relationships with local community groups and will ensure that Penistone Community Radio works with them to provide a service to benefit the groups and community.

Where possible they will be encouraged to learn how to present their own programmes/produce their own features, Richard will manage this documented process.

Richard will use his people skills and broadcast experience to help deliver our training commitment to our new and existing volunteers.

Richard will develop his existing relationships with local community groups and will ensure that Penistone Community Radio works with them to provide a service to benefit the groups and community.

Where possible they will be encouraged to learn how to present their own programmes/produce their own features, Richard will manage this documented process.

Richard will use his people skills and broadcast experience to help deliver our training commitment to our new and existing volunteers.

Richard Tolson - Learning & Development Director

Richard Tolson is Curriculum Quality Leader of Music at Barnsley College; he is also director of Music Support Ltd that creates educational multimedia resources for the teaching and learning of music technology, sold to individuals and educational establishments.

He is ICT literate and has website designing skills. He has broadcast and been involved in Hospital radio and local RSL broadcasts over many years. He is a Digidesign Instructor teaching ProTools for Broadcast / film / radio and music production.

Richard is knowledgeable in a wide range of music styles having studied a Popular Music Degree before his teaching qualification.

Richard will develop our relationships with Penistone Grammar School and other local schools as well as Youth organisations such as Surf n Snack shack and Barnsley Youth Council.

Richard will lead on our training and development programmes. Richard will also present programmes on Penistone Community Radio.
